FAQs

Q: Is this a national commemoration?

A: Yes, it was established through legislation authorizing the 75th World War II Commemoration under the Department of Defense. National Co-chairpersons Bob and Elizabeth Dole and Presenting Sponsor Linda Hope of The Bob and Dolores Hope Foundation lead the efforts.

The 75th anniversary of the End of WWII will be commemorated with events in two locations:

Note: May events previously scheduled for Washington DC have been rescheduled.
August 29 – September 2 in Hawaii – end of war in the Pacific
September 24 – 27 in Washington, DC – end of war in Europe

Q: What is the Goal of the 75th Commemoration of the End of WWII?

A: The commemoration will help us remember the events, the battles, the courage and service of our WWII veterans, and the global impact triggered by the end of war declarations to peace and global friendship that mark the ceremony that took place on the deck of the USS Missouri, now moored in Pearl Harbor, a perpetual symbol of peace for the world.

Q: What are some of the ways the Commemoration will accomplish that?

A: We hope to engage our Hawaii community and visitors in remembering and honoring those who served and continue to serve our country, highlighting the strategic role of Hawaii then and now, in the defense of our nation. We encourage as many people as possible to attend commemoration events.

The Committee will coordinate culminating events and programs that help our nation and the world commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII.

We are developing educational programs, experiences, exhibits and events that preserve the legacy of our “Greatest Generation,” thus ensuring that young and old alike honor our past and inspire our future.

Q: What types of events or activities will there be?

A: Tributes, Events, Exhibits, Flyovers, and Community Enrichment and Engagement Programs will take place statewide. (A complete list is available at 75thwwiicommemoration.org)

Leading up to the events of August – September, there will be stories, artifacts, and oral histories honoring the role of WWII veterans, as well as local companies/organizations and civilians whose contributions to the war effort may have been overlooked in history.

Q: How can you help or get involved with the 75th World War II Commemoration?

A: There are many ways to contribute:

  • Help us locate as many WWII veterans as possible and spread the word about the 75th

  • Donate and encourage others to do the same

  • For companies or organizations, we encourage you to become a sponsor
